Lucan watched the great black wolf vanish into the grass. Part of his mind whispered that he ought to attack, that he should strike before she carried word to Mazael. Because perhaps the only person that could change Mazael Cravenlock’s mind about anything was his wife, and she was against Lucan. Only Romaria’s sense of honor had stopped her from shooting him then and there.

The practical part of Lucan’s mind pointed out that she was moving too fast, that he wouldn’t have been able to hit her with a spell in any event.

And the rest of his mind was disgusted that he had even thought of killing her. It was a legacy of his old ways of thinking, the path that had led him to ruin. Once he had considered everything in the light of the greater good, thinking any cost or action worthwhile so long as it defended the Grim Marches from dark magic.

The end of that path had been Lucan unleashing the greatest catastrophe of dark magic the Grim Marches had seen in centuries.

“She was half-Elderborn, was she not?” said Aericura.

“Aye,” said Lucan. “Her mother was an Elderborn of Deepforest Keep, her father the human Champion of the city. He fell fighting the Malrags.”

That, at least, was one death that had not been Lucan’s fault.

“I thought hybrids of human and Elderborn always succumbed to the Elderborn half of their souls and became mindless beasts,” said Aericura. “Perhaps it has not yet happened to her.”

“No,” said Lucan. “It already did. I was there for it.” Aericura raised an eyebrow. “Ah…the Old Demon struck her down, and Mazael thought she was dead. But the Elderborn half of her soul healed her, and she wandered the Grim Marches for years as a giant black wolf. We realized what had happened, and I cast a spell to give her back her mind. She later faced herself in the caverns under Deepforest Keep and gained full control of her power. I don’t know exactly what happened.”

He didn’t know because he had been incapacitated at the time, overwhelmed by the dark power of the Demonsouled blood he had stolen from Mazael.

Yet another major milestone on the road to his self-destruction.

“That was why she spared your life,” said Aericura. “Because you aided her.”

“Yes,” said Lucan. “And no doubt she realized that if I was slain, the shard would start summoning random undead. But the next time we see her…”

“I don’t think we persuaded her,” said Lothar.

“No,” said Aericura. “Sadly, we did not. It seems she is unable to see past Lucan’s prior deeds.”

“Little wonder she can’t see past them,” said Lucan, “given how dark they were. They drown out everything else.” He shook his head. “Everything Romaria said is true. She had no reason to trust me whatsoever.” He swallowed. “She’ll tell Mazael everything…and Mazael will kill me. Once he does, perhaps it would be best for you to take my shard back to Liminalus and the Thorned Tower. Having two of the three secured
